About SMA

The first of its kind locally, the Singapore Media Awards (SMA) showcases and celebrates the importance of outstanding media thinking and strategising behind highly successful advertising campaigns.

SMA will demonstrate how the media and media owners play an important role in the success of a well-executed campaign. Judges will be looking for media practices that contribute significantly to the success and results of a campaign. With the advent of new media platforms, agencies are embracing new media in innovative ways, thus raising the standards within the industry.

About the Jury

Angela Ng

Managing Director of ANtrepod (Learning & Development consultancy)
Founder of Pod of Life (Social enterpise in promoting resilience)

Angela is an Advertising/Marketing veteran with 20 years of experience. She has been in a leadership position for over a decade with proven business results and strong Admarcom knowledge in the APAC region.

She comes with a wealth of extensive experience, having been well expose 360 degree in the marketing industry from running advertising agencies (CEO of Initiative China and Managing Director of Starcom China), media vendor (as a Publisher for Instyle and Maxim magazines under SCMP Group) to client’s role as Regional Media Director (APAC) for LVMH Group.

Driven by a passion to give back to the industry and groom future talents, Angela had been wearing a double hat as in-house trainer for the industry since her advertising days for over a decade.

She had also lectured in many Universities including Peking University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 2007 to 2012. She was a spirited speaker at the “4th Rich Media Advertising Conference” in Shanghai (2008) and “Media 360 Summit” in Hong Kong (2015). She also sat on the Jury panel for ROI Awards in China from 2010-2012 and was the finalist of Woman In Leadership of Australia-China Alumni Awards 2011.

Currently she is a senior lecturer with tertiary institutes, a resilience trainer and 4As Talent Development consultant.

Anuj Jain

Co-Founder & CEO of Startup-O

Anuj co-founded Startup-O which is South East Asia’s largest online platform for startup rating, investment & venture building. It deploys a proprietary assessment process involving a community of global experts & rating algorithms to discover promising tech start-ups across South/South East Asia. This data driven & transparent approach help investors in the fund to access a diversified portfolio of growth stage companies. He is driven by the vision of democratising innovation by enabling every promising tech startup to succeed with a ‘Fast & Efficient’ connect to strategic capital & global expert networks.

Anuj has rich ‘Go To Market’ knowhow across 14 Asian markets from ‘Japan to Jakarta’. He gained a wealth of experience in his career spanning across companies like Procter & Gamble, Glaxo Smithkline Beecham, WIPRO, BIC and in Tech Startup world with successful scaling of Jungle Venture portfolio company in F&B SaaS domain before he co-founded Startup-O in 2016.

He is a strong contributor to Singapore & SEA startup ecosystem, and as such, has a deep understanding of pain areas for both startups and angel investors. A strong proponent of the ‘Pay it Forward’ philosophy, he actively shares his knowledge and experience with brave entrepreneurs and investors alike.

Ben Tan

Country CEO of COURTS Singapore Pte Ltd

Mr Ben Tan is Country CEO of COURTS Singapore. He joined COURTS as Designate Country CEO in January 2017, assuming his current role as Country CEO of COURTS Singapore Pte Ltd in April 2017. As CEO, he oversees and is responsible for driving all of COURTS’ local retail and business operations across its islandwide network of 14 stores as well as its e-commerce platform, COURTS Online.

Prior to COURTS, Ben headed Andios Pte Ltd, a Challenger subsidiary, as its CEO from 2015 to 2016, and prior to that served as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Challenger Technologies (Singapore) from 2012 to 2015. During his tenure as COO, he grew the company’s revenue to its then highest level in FY2013, and introduced critical planning and strategising processes to improve business and people efficiency across the organisation. He also led the development of a private label brand, Valore, establishing its product presence in 15 countries across Asia Pacific.

Before Challenger, Ben spent almost 17 years with Microsoft in various country and regional leadership roles, including the last held position of General Manager, Retail Sales & Marketing for Microsoft (APAC), from 2005 to 2012. In this position, he oversaw four business units including XBOX, Windows, Office and PC Hardware in nine countries, and won the Polaris Award for Leadership and Management Excellence at Microsoft for FY2012 — awarded to individual leaders who excel at people development and organisation building.

Ben holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Portland, and lives in Singapore with his wife and two sons.

Graham Woodall

Director of Creative & Media, Fonterra GCB/GCFS

Graham’s career spans three continents and almost three decades, creating and inspiring award-winning ideas for a host of household name brands. He was the Global Creative Director at Leo Burnett Chicago for Kellogg’s and Samsung, Regional Creative Director for D’Arcy Asia, Executive Creative Director at JWT Chicago and D’Arcy New York. He also worked as a copywriter in London and Hong Kong.

During his career, he created integrated campaigns for iconic brands like Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, Heineken, P&G, American Express, Capital One, Kraft, Nestle and Le Coq Sportif. His work has been honoured at D&AD, Cannes and numerous international awards shows. Most recently he joined Fonterra in Singapore as global Director of Creative and Media.

Michelle Lim

CEO & Co-founder of M.A.D. School by Chatsworth Medi@art Academy

Michelle Lim is the CEO and Co-Founder of award-winning advertising school, M.A.D. School by Chatsworth Medi@rt Academy and social enterprise (creative agency) Make The Change. She has been actively involved in tertiary education and lifelong learning since 1996. She advocates that everyone can be creative. With her extensive connection with professionals from the marketing, advertising and design industries, her real time, real learning methodology has transformed and produced D&AD, Crowbar and Young Stars award-winning creatives who started from ground zero.

Her unconventional approach to education and many ground-breaking methodologies have earned M.A.D. School a reputation as the pioneer of New Education in Singapore (Channel NewsAsia, December 2014).

Her social enterprise Make The Change (MTC) has been serving more than 80 charities, NGOs and commercial clients in 4 short years. In 2015, MTC was the recipient of Commendation Award (Start-up Category) at the President’s Challenge Social Enterprise Award for its contribution and impact made through building an eco-system for design for good.

Nick Goh

Chief Executive Officer of YP Digital

Nick Goh is the Chief Executive Officer of YP Digital, a division of the restructured Yellow Pages Pte Ltd.

Nick brings to YP Digital over 22+ years of branding, advertising and digital marketing experience.

Having spent time in both local and international agencies, Nick has managed a number of notable brands such as Acer Computer International, AMD, Cisco Systems, Cloudera, Far East Organisation, IBM (with Juniper Networks), MTV Asia, Red Hat Asia Pacific, SAP, Singtel Consumer Sales, Singtel Mobile, Sun Microsystems, SMU and many more.

Nick holds degrees from UWA (Australia) and NUS (Honours) as well as training certifications in ACTA and DACE (recognised by the Singapore government) as Nick is also a seasoned digital marketing lecturer and trainer.

Pearlyn Tseng

Director of Corporate Communications, Corporate Development & Communications Group (CDCG), National Council of Social Service (NCSS)

Pearlyn has over 20 years of marketing and corporate communication experience across private, public and non-profit sectors. In her current role at the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), she oversees corporate communications, branding, digital marketing and public education initiatives. In 2016, as part of a national Enabling Masterplan to build a caring and inclusive nation, she led the ‘See the true me’ public education campaign, to address public attitudes towards persons with disabilities (PwDs). The campaign has won 11 awards including Best Government PR campaign for two consecutive years in 2017 and 2018. More importantly, more in the community are seeing PwDs for their abilities instead of their disabilities and the campaign has generated greater interest in the hiring of PwDs in Singapore.

Prior to joining NCSS, she led the Corporate Marketing and Industry Partnership teams in Health Promotion Board (HPB). Her stint at HPB was where she built up the award-winning ‘I Quit’ campaign brand and brought many health concerns such as obesity, dementia, colon cancer to the forefront of public attention. She has also worked with corporate brands to bring greater value and strategic alignment to industry partnership engagements and was part of the pioneer team involved in the development of a loyalty programme in the integrated Healthhub mobile app to encourage healthy behaviours in Singaporeans. Her belief in the importance of building a high performing in-house team and strong partnerships with agencies led to HPB winning the Most Effective Advertiser at the Singapore Effie Awards.

Since 2013, she has contributed her time on jury panels for the Singapore Media Awards, Singapore Effie, APPIES Awards, Singapore Advertising Hall of Fame, and participated in roundtable discussions on marketing effectiveness in the public sector.

Samir Dixit

Managing Director, Brand Finance Asia Pacific

With a global career spanning over 25 years across brand, marketing, communications, consulting and financial Industry, Samir has a wealth of experience across global business and brand strategy, research, IP management, valuation, corporate communication, PR, global brand management, balanced scorecards, M&A branding, brand architecture, advertising, etc.

Previously, as a global brand controller at Standard Chartered Bank, Samir managed the global brand agenda with strong focus on global brand strategy, brand and business integration and brand architecture & alignment during M&A. Samir was also actively involved with the brand valuation and franchise aspects of the Standard Chartered brand.

In his various roles across marketing communications and advertising, Samir has worked across industry segments including FMCG, retail, hospitality, industrial products, automobiles, electronics, F&B, telecom, pharma, healthcare, Banking & Finance, airlines, spirits and wines, Health and Beauty, NGOs, etc.

Samir is an external speaker, a certified senior PMC, on the advisory committees with government bodies across ASEAN for brand and IP related matters, contributes to teaching and curriculum inputs at management institutes. He has also presented at various brand conferences in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

In the past 12 months, Samir has been driving brand, marketing, and business acceleration strategies for B2B and B2C segments alike for large multinationals, local corporates and the SMEs across industry and consumer segments in south East Asia.

Ted Choo

Head of Corporate Marketing, Singapore Management University

Ted Choo is a serial enterprising marketer. Currently at Singapore Management University as Head of Corporate Marketing & Branding; his career has span areas as diverse as marketing, advertising, media, design, business consulting, start-ups, fund raising, mentorship and volunteerism.

His initial career years were spent with prestigious firms such as Ogilvy & Mather, American Express and The Ball Partnership/EURO RSCG. In 1993, a combination of enterprise, rebellious streak and naivety took Ted into unchartered territory by pioneering Monsoon Advertising with a few friends. They became known as the ‘giant killer’ having clinched Mercedes Benz/Cycle & Carriage on their maiden pitch. 7 years later with a stable of big international clients and strings of awards; they merged with Lowe & Partners Worldwide.

In 2000, with ‘dot.com’ dreams shattered, Ted and a few friends started Gosh Advertising to ‘fuel the soul and spirit (and fill their stomachs)’. It was an adventure to say the least having braved through the global financial crisis and SARS. It was a test of tenacity, compassion, business acumen, personal and professional character. Following three successful joint ventures in Financial Marketing (HK), Shopper Marketing (US) and Property Marketing (China) and a healthy brand in Gosh; Ted sold his shares after 12 years at the helm.

Ted’s contributions to the industry was as President of The 4As (2009 -2012) where he led the industry charge on key initiatives to improve the professionalism and recognition of his marketing and advertising colleagues. He worked tirelessly with WDA, Design Council, SPRING Singapore, e2i, NTUC and C4As. His efforts can be seen at the Singapore Pavilion of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

In addition to running his own business and being the President of The 4As, Ted also mentors and lectures at Singapore Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, SMU and GroupM. He was on the Advisory Panel of NUS New Media & Communications at the same time. These experiences of learning and imparting had a profound impression that led Ted to his second wind.

Having sold off his business, Ted took a gap year (2013) to travel, volunteer, discover and reflect. Trekking in Bhutan, building homes in Bangladesh, Laos, Cambodia and Batam; animal conservation works in Zimbabwe and South Africa to organic farming in Chiang Mai… those were the happiest moments for Ted.

Aside from his day job at SMU, Ted also judges at Award shows such as NYP’s Entrepreneurship Day, Singapore Established Brand Award, Singapore Media Awards and Asia Effies. In his spare time, Ted takes long runs, goes through his bucket list and continue his volunteer work to advance the less fortunate across the region.

Yeoh Phee Suan

Director of Communications & Marketing, National Arts Council

Phee Suan heads the Communications and Marketing team at the National Arts Council where she drives the media relations, branding, marketing and digitalisation efforts to champion the creation and appreciation of the arts as an integral part of our lives. Prior to joining NAC, she worked on destination marketing for Downtown East and NTUC Club’s many fun offerings as well as marketing and positioning of the services of leading public transport company, ComfortDelgro.
